Our Role
In collaboration with teachers, school administrators, chefs, volunteer gardeners, and non-profit organizations, Farm to Desk D.C. empowers D.C. schoolchildren to make healthy and sustainable food choices. Catalyzed by a meeting between Alice Waters and Executive Director Sarah Weiner, the program brings the impact of Urban Farms, School Lunch Transformation, and a rigorous Food and Ecology Curriculum to schools in our nation’s capital. Funded by a grant from Kaiser Permanente, Farm to Desk D.C. makes healthy lifestyles appealing and attainable for city children.

Project Details
Farm to Desk D.C. provides teachers and administrators with the tools to create a living laboratory that nourishes and educates their students. The program is rooted in the knowledge that the foundation for a lifetime of health rests on early exposure to responsible food choices. Building upon the proven framework of Berkeley’s Edible Schoolyard, Farm to Desk D.C. powerfully shifts each school’s food culture and nutritional awareness. With support from the Food and Farm Curriculum Director, each school’s Urban Garden provides the base for a School Lunch Transformation that greatly improves the school cafeteria, as well as generates interactive content for the Food and Ecology curriculum.
